District Program Child Find Responsibilities

10.55.804 Gifted and Talented

1. Schools shall provide educational services to gifted and talented   students.

2. Each school shall comply with all federal and state laws and regulations addressing gifted education.

3. Each school shall provide structured support and assistance to teachers identifying and meeting diverse student needs, and shall provide a framework for considering a full range of alternatives for addressing student needs.

          Every person has the right to human dignity and respect.

School environments need to insure for the physical safety and mental well-being of its participants.

Learning is a lifelong process.  Gifted and Talented students need to become advocates of their own learning.

Educators must be knowledgeable, proactive facilitators of learning for all students.

The school community must be actively engaged in the process of thinking, and promoting personal responsibility.

Goals:

Student Goals:

Master skills of the core curriculum

Improve analytical, critical, creative thinking and problem-solving skills

Increase self-understanding and develop interpersonal skills that will enhance their ability to be advocates of their learning

Develop self-directed learning skills

Acquire and produce original knowledge

District and Teacher Goals:

Increase teacher knowledge and understanding of gifted student characteristics and needs

Collaborate with teachers to ensure that the educational needs of gifted and talented students are met in the regular classroom or in pull-out sessions as appropriate          

Implement differentiation techniques to the regular classroom instruction

Identification:

Definition: Children who demonstrate or possess growingl abilities that show evidence of high performance in intellectual, creative, specific academic areas, performing arts, or visual arts.

Identification is based on the following:

          CRT – Advanced levels in Reading and/or Math

          MAP – Advanced levels in Reading , Math, and/or Language Usage

          Classroom Achievement

          Teacher or Parent Recommendation

          Testing – Kbit2 with a score in any area of 115 or higher

Re-evaluation:

The coordinator reviews all students’ progress and success twice a year to see if adjustments in the program need to occur. 

If an individual student is showing a decline in classroom achievement or testing scores. Students maybe re-evaluated for continuation in the Gifted and Talented program.

Referral Process:

          Teacher refers student to coordinator

          Coordinator looks at previous testing and collects classroom data

          Coordinator meets with the classroom teacher to gain more insight

          Coordinator meets with administrator and counselor

          If deemed appropriate, Parent contacted via letter for permission to test

          Testing administered by Coordinator

          Results, along with other data, evaluated to assure acceptance to program

          Parents contacted again with results

Services Available:     

Services may include any or the entire following list of options.

In classroom adjustments:

          Compacting

          Acceleration

          Specially designed projects

          Alternative assignments

          Independent work contracts

Other adjustments:

          Access to GT Coordinator at most times

          Pull-out times for extensions in Literacy

Pull-out time with specific Gifted and Talented Curriculum to enhance analytical, critical, creative thinking and problem-solving skills

Individual goal setting and independent work plans
